What’s a Throttle Body?

A throttle body is the component that regulates airflow into an engine by opening and closing a butterfly valve in response to the accelerator pedal, directly controlling the air-fuel mixture the ECU needs for combustion.

When the driver presses the accelerator pedal, the throttle body’s butterfly valve opens, allowing more air to enter the engine. The ECU adjusts fuel injection to match the increased air intake, keeping the air-fuel ratio optimal for combustion.

Why Upgrade to an Aftermarket Throttle Body?

Upgrading to an electronic aftermarket larger-bore throttle body can dramatically increase airflow and throttle response. A bigger bore means more incoming airflow, which means a sharper response on the pedal and more potential for other performance components in your induction system, like a cold air intake or throttle enhancer.

Benefits of Upgrading:

Upgrading a throttle body can offer several benefits for a vehicle’s performance and efficiency.

  • Increased Airflow: A larger bore allows more air to enter the engine, improving combustion efficiency and power output. A 78mm bore vs. a stock 74mm bore, for instance, is a 4mm increase that translates directly into more airflow and measurable gains.
  • Improved Throttle Response: A performance throttle body provides a more direct, responsive connection between the accelerator pedal and the engine, resulting in quicker acceleration and a more engaging driving experience.
  • Enhanced Engine Performance: Combined with other modifications, such as a high-flow air intake or performance exhaust, an upgraded throttle body can contribute to significant gains in horsepower and torque.

aFe Throttle Body Upgrades

  • Specific numbers vary by vehicle application, but most aFe POWER electronic plug-and-play throttle body upgrades share the same core features.

    • Larger bore diameter than the factory unit, guaranteed. For example, the Ram 1500 TRX 97mm throttle body is 5mm larger than the stock 92mm unit. The Chevy Corvette C7/C8 95mm throttle body is 8mm larger than the stock 87mm unit.
    • Plug-and-play electronics — Direct bolt-on installation using factory wiring and mounting locations, no rewiring needed
    • No tuning required on all applications
    • 6061-T6 billet aluminum adapter, precision machined for strength and fit
    • Serrated/swirl combination design that creates intake turbulence in the combustion chamber, breaking up fuel for a more complete combustion cycle — improving horsepower, torque, and throttle response (on select applications)

Upgrade Your Airflow

Throttle bodies play a vital role in the performance and efficiency of internal combustion engines, making them a key component in modern automotive design. aFe POWER Throttle Bodies are a straightforward plug-and-play solution for more airflow and throttle response that require no tune. For maximum performance, pair with an aFe Cold Air Intake to feed it even more airflow, along with plug-and-play Throttle Enhancers and Power Modules to enhance all areas of your throttle response, horsepower, torque, and overall driving experience.
