Frequently Asked Questions
Air Filters
How do I maintain my air filter?
We recommend cleaning your filter around every 20k-30k miles. You may need to clean it sooner if you’ve been through extremely dusty or dirty conditions.
- Still need help? Watch the step-by-step instructional video on how to clean your dry or oiled filter, or download a printable PDF instructional guide here.
Are your filters reusable?
What's the difference between air filter media?
1. aFe POWER offers four types of filter media. Three of them are oiled, and one is dry. Each media caters to varying needs, such as driving conditions, maintenance levels, and protection levels.
2. The Pro 5R and the Pro DRY S are the most common and popular media we offer. The availability of media offered varies depending on the filter and the application.
3. To learn more about the difference between our filter media, check out the blog post >“What’s the difference between aFe air filter media?”
What's the purpose of the oil for?
How do I know which air filter I have?
- The color of your filter may be able to determine what filter you have, though because the dye in the oil fades over time, we recommend differing to the part number of your filter.
- Your original order information and the instruction sheet that came with it will have the part number. If you do not have that information, try the alternative methods below.
- If you have an aFe POWER filter installed in a stock or aFe POWER cold air intake air box, identification may require disassembly. On a conical filter, you can find the part number in a small button-like circle on the flange opening. On a rectangular filter, you can find the part number on its side. Enter the part number in the search box on our website.
- If you have a complete aFe POWER cold air intake and know its part number, you can enter it on our website. After locating the correct product page for the intake, click on the instruction sheet or scroll down to find the corresponding filter.
- You may also "Search by Vehicle" on our website. Enter your year, make, and model. Then, find the air filter or intake kit that matches the one you have.
- For an in-depth guide, read the blog post, "How do I know what filter I have?"
How do I get a replacement air filter?
1. aFe POWER Air Filters are washable and reusable and should last the lifetime of your vehicle. To ensure proper functionality, we recommend maintaining your air filter regularly by cleaning, and oiling it if you have an oiled filter, every 20k-30k miles or sooner if you've been through extremely dusty or dirty conditions.
2. To get a replacement filter or an additional filter with different media, you can search for it on the aFe POWER website by the filter’s part number. If you need help finding that, see “Where can I find the part number for an aFe POWER Air Filter?
To order replacement parts, please call 951-493-7100 and press “1” for Customer Service.
Why does the filter fade from blue to grey?
- The color comes from the dye in the oil and fades over time. You should wash and re-oil the filter every 20-30,000 miles to maintain optimal performance.
- A dirty air filter will block the air flow to your engine. It is important to maintain your air filter regularly.
- The grey air filter may confuse you so it may be helpful to check the "part number" on the button
- Type in the "part number" in the search window to verify which filter you have (Pro 5R vs. Pro Dry S) before cleaning and oiling.
What is an pre-filter? How do I find one?
- Pre-Filters are light, meshy sleeves that protect your air filter with minimal effect on airflow. They serve as the first line of defense against debris, twigs, and bugs and come in handy in extremely dirty or dusty environments. Pre-Filters extend cleaning intervals, and the dry-weave material is easily washable with soap and water.
- Search for your filter's part number, then scroll down toward the bottom of its product page. There, you should see the Pre-Filter that fits.
Do you build custom filters?
- Yes, we have a "Build-your-own-filter” service. Please click here to see if we can build you a custom filter.
What cleaner do I need?
We recommend cleaning and oiling with the correct aFe Cleaning & Restoration Kit (Blue for Pro 5R and Pro 10R and Gold for Pro-GUARD 7). See our Cleaning & Restoration Kits here.
How often do I need to clean my filter?
Keeping up with regular maintenance improves the lifespan and efficiency of your engine air filter, but over-cleaning is detrimental. Make sure to strike the right balance. A good rule of thumb is to clean your air filter around the 20k-30k mile mark. You'll need to clean it sooner if you've been through extremely dusty or dirty environments.
What is the difference between the inverted top vs. the flat top?
The inverted top allows for slightly more dust holding capacity by increasing surface area.
Does this fit my car?
There are two ways to see if the part fits your vehicle. (www.aFePOWER.com)
The best way to check if the part fits your vehicle is to SEARCH BY VEHICLE on the top right of the website (see image below). Be sure to select your vehicle specs accurately.
VEHICLE APPLICATIONS
Another way to check if the part fits your vehicle is to scroll down on the part page. The VEHICLE APPLICATION section is below the OVERVIEW.
Air Intake Systems
What is the difference between cold air intake systems?
- Some systems are open, and others are sealed. Open systems will make more noise and provide easier maintenance. Sealed systems will be quieter, protect the engine from excess debris, and offer more cold air.
- We engineer each intake with elements to suit different vehicles and preferences. The horsepower and torque gains depend on multiple factors. Compare the intake kits by searching for your vehicle to see which will meet your needs.
- We also offer "OE+ Kits" that retain more stock components than others (for example, the stock tube or the stock airbox.)
Why did my coupler crack?
- Excessive heat and harsh cleaning chemicals can break down the material prematurely. The warranty period on couplers is two years.
- Please call 951-493-7100 and press “1” for Customer Service.
- CUSTOMER SUPPORT REQUEST
Do you build custom intakes?
- Sorry, we do not build custom air intake systems. If you have a request, let us know your year, make and model to see if this is a model for us to look into.
Electronics
What's a power module?
Why did I get a check engine light?
- We test each one of our electronics extensively on the dyno and on the road before release to ensure that no CELs are associated with the product.
- Verify that all connectors from the engine harness and the power module are plugged in all the way and in the correct orientation. Double-check that the male and female connectors from the power module are inserted in the correct respective ports. Most of the time, incorrect installation of the connectors is the cause of CELs.
Do your Power Modules leave a trace on the ECU/computer?
- No, our power modules are plug-and-play and will not leave a trace.
How much power do your Power Modules produce?
- Power gains vary from vehicle to vehicle. Using our website, please enter your vehicle to find the corresponding modules. You will find the dyno-results and power gains on each product page.
What is the difference between a Scorcher GT, Scorcher HD, and Scorcher BLUE?
The GT and HD Scorchers are for gas and diesel vehicles with an in-cabin controller that can switch between modes. Scorcher BLUE uses Bluetooth to switch modes using a smartphone app.
What is a Sprint Booster?
- Sprint Booster is a throttle enhancer that eliminates lag and quickens acceleration response. You may use Sprint Boosters with all aFe POWER products.
Can I use your Power Module with other aftermarket parts?
- We test all aFe products in-house to be compatible with each other. You can use our power modules with aFe intakes, throttle body spacers, exhaust components, suspension, etc.
- However, we do not recommend that our power modules be used alongside other modules or programmers due to a lack of controlled testing. Doing so may cause damage to your vehicle.
Does installing a SCORCHER void my vehicle's manufacturer warranty?
No. Based on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a vehicle manufacturer cannot void the warranty of your vehicle due to an aftermarket part unless it is proven that the aftermarket part was the cause of or contributed to the failure of the vehicle (15 U.S.C. 2302 (C)).

Orders & Shipping

- We offer free shipping on qualifying orders valued over $100 to 48 states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
- We currently do not offer expedited shipping.
Why isn't my tracking number working?
- Don’t worry if tracking results are not immediately available or old tracking information appears. Carriers sometimes take up to 72 hours to update information on their websites. Carriers may reuse tracking numbers and sometimes won’t remove old records until they post new activity.
It says my order was delivered, but I don't see it.
- If you get an alert that an item has been delivered and you don’t see your order, please note that sometimes carriers occasionally mark packages as ‘Delivered’ before they’re dropped off. Please contact the carrier if it has been more than two hours since receiving a delivery notification. Make sure to check other delivery spots, such as a back or front entrance, lobby, or neighbor’s door.
- If you exhausted all the above and still can’t find your order, and the shipping carrier has reported that it was delivered, please contact our Customer Service. We will reply during business hours and file a claim with the shipping carrier. Local law enforcement will be involved. We will replace or refund your order when the investigation is complete. Allow up to 21 days for the investigation.
What happens if the box my order comes in is damaged?
- We ensure that every order leaves in proper condition. If the box arrives damaged, mark it as “Damaged” when you sign for it with the mail carrier, and file a claim with the mail carrier. Check if all parts are included. Contact Customer Service for further inquiries.

C.A.R.B. (California Air Resource Board)
What is C.A.R.B.?
- The California Air Resources Board, also known as C.A.R.B. is the "Clean Air Agency" in the government of California.
- Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an ARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown not to increase vehicle emissions is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission-controlled vehicles. Every Executive Order part or modification has an assigned number that Smog Check stations, BAR Referee stations, or the ARB can verify.
How do I get a CARB E.O. sticker?
- All items that have been granted an Executive Order number from CARB will have an EO sticker in the kit and must be placed on or near the device. To see if your vehicle has been granted an Executive Order number, look up your vehicle's year, make, and model on the aFepower.com or ARB website. If, for some reason, you are missing the EO sticker or have any other questions, please submit a CARB Inquiry by clicking on the CARB contact block.
- If you lost your sticker, you can request CARB EO sticker here. C.A.R.B. Inquiries | aFe POWER
